Dmitri Mendeleev

 

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born in Verkhnie Aremzyani, Siberia on February 8th 1834, and died on the 2nd of February 1907. He is known for creating the very first periodic table of elements. Growing up, Dmitri lived with over ten siblings. By the age of 13, his father had died, and in 1849 the Mendeleev family moved to Saint Petersburg where Dmitri enrolled himself in school and graduated by 1850. He became a science master after he relocated to the Crimean Peninsula in 1855, and later became a teacher.
There were a total of 56 known elements in the chemistry world by 1863. About one element was discovered per year. Medeleev worked hard to study these elements. With time, he was able to write the “Principles of Chemistry” which was a chemistry textbook. As he was writing this, Dmitri noticed patterns while writing out elements. He put these patterns together and came up with the periodic table of elements. After presenting his theory to the Russian Chemical Society, Medeleev proceded to predict new elements, and add on to the periodic table.
