Avid Weekly Writing Prompt

Throughout this school year, we have opened our eyes to the many problems involving global warming. We have talked about it in class, watched movies such as "An Inconvenient Truth", and read various articles about this issue. There are many things that we can debate as being "true" or not. Some ideas on global warming can be considered the stretched truth. These elements may be true, however only to a certain extent. There are few drastic measures our country can take to help global warming. On the other hand, there are many little things that our communities can do to make a difference.
1. The United States has kept the topic of "Global Warming" under it's eye for quite some time. There has been much buzz about it, however the country cannot simply stop all global warming. But the U.S can start to make a difference. Government officials can make a difference by encouraging the usage of renewable energy sources. This energy comes in forms of heat, sunlight, water, and rain. If wind turbines are set in places with a lot of wind, for example high in the mountains, when the wind turns the turbine, it produces energy. Personally I have seen many of these turbines along the countrysides in Europe. However, I have never seen one in the United States. Hydropower is another source of renewable energy in which is empowered by water. Since water is about 800 times denser than air, even a settle stream of water can produce a lot of energy. Solar energy is produced from the energy of sunlight. This energy has become more popular with powering cars, and electricity within one's home. However, it is very costly like the rest of renewable energy sources. If the government began to install more of these sources around our country, it would not stop the affects of global warming, but lower them significantly. On the economic side, wind turbines and solar power pannels are very costly. Part of this may be because of supply and demand. If these are rare, then they will cost more. However when they become more popular, the demand will be higher and the costs will go down.
2. There are many things individuals can do within their communities to help solve this problem. For example, always turning a light when one leaves a room, walking or biking instead of taking a car, and unplugingcell phone chargers when not in use. These are all the tipical 'tips' on how to save energy. Nonetheless, there are even more things we can do as a community to help make our world better. Events are made through Facebook where a nation of people decide to stop all use of electricity or cars for one entire hour. This way, the world can breathe. That simple hour or two could help the world significantly, if we get the word out and make the movement monumental.
3. Arch Street, the local teen center in Greenwich is going green, and bringing awareness to kids and the community. http://archstreet.org/page/green-pizza We also have a club at our own highschool which is called 'Go Green!' and is run by Ellen Johnsmeyer which also brings awareness to kids and encourages them to 'go green'.
